NUCLEIC ACID. By J. F. Danielli and R. Brown. Symposia of the Society for Experimental Biology, No. 1. Cambridge University Press. The Macmillan Co., New York, 1947. vi + 290 pp. $8.50 This volume presents the papers read at a symposium of the Society for Experimental Biology held at Cambridge in July 1946. The reader will find much basic material pertaining to current concepts of the chemistry and biology of the nucleic acids and related compounds. The far-reaching importance of these substances becomes immediately apparent from the diversity of fields to which their study has contributed. One gets glimpses of applications to cytology and cytopathology, to biological chemistry and to bacteriology, to genetics and oncology, and to cellular physiology in its most basic sense. The outstanding achievements of the Institute for Cell Research of Stockholm are well represented in the papers of Casparsson and Hyden, and point to the great promise which this work holds for the future. Break Through Inspiration During IPPV is Seen as “Curare Crest" in Sevograph
Background: The break through spontaneous effort in anaesthetized and ventilated patients is seen as ‘curarecleft’ during expiratory plateau phase of the capnography. At the open position of the sevoflurane vaporizer, the sevograph displays a mirror image graph to the capnograph. We studied the sevograph changes corresponding to ‘curare-cleft’ in capnography. Methods: We have observed that duri...

The President: Now it is my pleasure to introduce Dr Ann Ferguson. The title of her talk is “Some Curare Murders?” Well, that interests me. Dr Ferguson is a retired anaesthetist and she says that her particular interest in curare goes back to a research year at McGill University, in Montreal. Then, on retirement, she did the Diploma in the History of Medicine at the Society Apothecaries and her...
متن کاملCurare - A Curative Poison: A Scientometric Analysis
INTRODUCTION Curare is one of the best-examined neurotoxins of the world, which has empirically been used for centuries by American Indigenes. Research on curare has been performed much later, a global scientometric analysis on curare research or its derivates does not yet exist. This bibliometric analysis is part of the global NewQis-project and should illuminate both toxic and historic issues...
متن کاملThe Effects of Curare in the Cockroach
For many years insects were believed to be insensitive to curare (Harlow, 1958; Hopf, 1952; Krupp, Lendle & Stapenhorst, 1952; Roeder, 1948, 1953; Roeder & Weiant, 1950; Usherwood, 1963). However, Larsen, Miller & Yamamoto (1966) have demonstrated that intra-abdominal injection of d-tubocurarine chloride (dTC) into insects causes paralysis. The nature of this paralysis is of interest because th...
متن کاملPotassium depletion and the central action of curare.
PELOUZE and Bernard (1850) first described the peripheral nature of curare paralysis. Further investigation, begun in 1852 by Claude Bernard, demonstrated the action of curarine to be at the neuromuscular junction (Bernard, 1856). Thus, one hundred years ago, the idea crystallized that the central actions of curare were unimportant or nonexistent, and was given form by such statements as " Mais...

Although for many years insects were believed to be insensitive to curare (Harlow, 1958; Hopf, 1952; Krupp, Lendle & Stapenhorst, 1952; Roeder, 1948, 1953; Roeder & Weiant, 1950; Usherwood, 1963), the recent report of Larsen, Miller & Yamamoto (1966) has demonstrated that insects are, indeed, sensitive to curare. Subsequent investigations (McCann, 1966; Flattum, Friedman & Larsen, 1967; Friedma...
